Innaugural Orange County Beer Mile

Organizers

The inaugural Orange County Kingston Beer Mile was held at the end of the Summer in 2000. None of the 10 participants or about 20 fans knew what to expect. Going in, Doug and Eric were considered the favorites. During our trips to Las Vegas, Doug exhibited a lot of talent for drinking beer very quickly. The question was, would he be able to stand after drinking 4 beers and, more importantly, would he still be able run? Eric had the endurance. He had done many lsd (long slow drinking) training sessions. However, his drinking speed was questionable.

Steve had trained hard all summer to increase his drinking speed and endurance but was considered an underdog. But when the race started, Steve was the first one done with his beer and proceeded to finish his first lap split in 1:23. Doug was close behind in 1:28. Steve powered down his second beer and Doug was close on his heels. Steve's pace slowed while drinking his third beer but his running didn't slow a beat. Doug did catch Steve while Steve was drinking his 4th beer, but the beer factor had hit Doug. After running 3 laps, Doug had to ask what lap he was on. Steve took off for his final lap and Doug had too much in the tank to catch him. Steve finished strong in 7:14, a top 100 time in the history of the beer mile.

On the women's side, it was an even bet. Joan, a legend for being able to drink a 32oz scooner in less than 2 minutes, was a late entry. Tanja, a Big West Conference Champion in the 5000 - a NCAA Division I scholarship athlete, was the other entry. It was the classic match of beer drinking speed vs foot speed. Tanja got an early lead but Joan passed her drinking. Tanja eventually pulled ahead and ran an excellent 9:10 women's beer mile in her first attempt. Then she proceeded to drink cider with some of us other beer mile participants and fans for the next 4 1/2 hours.
